Did you know, that chances are inside of your house right now there is a tool that can help save you a great deal of money, if used right? What is it you ask? It’s your ceiling fan!

There are 2 very simple but important rules in order to receive savings from your Ceiling Fans. Direction of Ceiling Fan during the summer

Rule #1: Run ceiling fans counterclockwise on medium to high speeds during hot weather only when the room is occupied.

Why? Because when a ceiling fan rotates counterclockwise (looking up at it) the slant of the blades pushes the air down, causing a noticeable breeze. The faster the fan spins, the cooler you feel.  This cooling effect doesn’t change the temperature of the air, it only creates wind chill, studies have shown  up to 10o cooler! This is why you should turn the fan off when no one is in the room. Otherwise the heat from the motor will actually heat up the room!

Rule #2: Run ceiling fans on low in a clockwise direction during cold weather.

Ceiling Fan Direction WinterCeiling fans can produce the opposite effect in the winter by gently circulating the hot air that is trapped near the ceiling. Since heat rises, (Click here for examples) the temperature near the ceiling is greater than at floor level. This is particularly true in houses with high ceilings or those with heating systems that do not circulate the air.  Why keep the fan on low? Because, keeping it low will help from creating a strong draft, which would cool you down instead of keeping you warm.

You will be surprised at how by just your ceiling fan how more comfortable you will be and the energy savings you can receive! We hope this energy tip from Energy Improvements the Oldest Radiant Barrier Company in the United States was helpful!
